show you how I naturally became a social media practitioner:
I’ve always been one of those tech-geeks who just has a certain understanding of technology. Plus I’ve always had a love of communication and community.
This manifested in a character I created in the 90’s called Ms Megabyte – did you ever see me on TV? I was on the Today Show on Channel 9 back in the Steve and Tracy days (1996-2004) – Ms Megabyte was the IT Reporter showing technology gadgets and software and teaching how to use them. It was fun, that’s for sure! I had a best selling book (Conquer Your Computer) and launched a speaking career.
Google came along, Smartphones too.. and Facebook. People started asking me more about how I got the IDEA of Ms Megabyte than they were asking me for technology help.
I started speaking about my creative thinking methods and brainstorming – teaching a process called Think : Pair : Share for solo brainstorming.
Then came Twitter. For a small business owner who’s 5 out of 6 staff as virtual (I’ve never met them but they do various hours per week of consulting for me) Twitter is a god-send. Imagine you had all the money in the world to fill your office with the EXACT people you’d choose to have around you. People you’d tap into for ideas. People you could contribute ideas to. People to share successes and losses. That’s Twitter.
Chris Brogan (fabulous blogger) puts it best: ‘We now have the means to find each other”.
…so there I was – a conference speaker who taught creative/thinking brainstorming and who needed to find a way for my clients to get the ideas they needed, WITHOUT me having to be there because I was getting more requests than I could handle.
I turned my brainstorming skills on myself and invented www.IdeasWhileYouSleep.com – I would do the brainstorming FOR the clients overnight. I wanted to harness the sharing / collaboration side of Twitter so I cast the net there to ask if anyone would be interested in receiving a small payment to do 15 minute brainstorms for my clients. I had 100 people register within the hour.
Fast forward to today. Clients submit their business challenge by 4pm and at 10am the next morning they get around 100 ideas from around the world. Each brainstorm is completed by a small team of my 500 Ideas Agents in 12 different countries and so far we’ve had clients from 8 different countries.
I have used Twitter to mobilise my workforce of Ideas Agents, also to promote the overnight brainstorming service by running Twitter brainstorms that everyone can use to get ideas for their own challenges. I give free ideas away on Fridays and sometimes ask the broader Twitter network to throw ideas into the mix for some client challenges.
This led to many enquiries about consulting and I’m having an absolute ball using my technology skills and love of community to assist other businesses to amplify their message via social media tools.
How I work with you

- We meet in person or via Skype or phone so I can understand your business and your goals.
- I outline my philosophies and practices and any relevant case studies from my previous clients.
- You receive a Social Media Strategy proposal. You love it and we get cracking. (usually you pay 50% up front, and 50% upon delivery of the Strategy)
- My team and I (I pull together the right virtual team for each project) research your industry, your competitors, outside your industry, immerse ourselves in your business and create a social media strategy for amplifying your marketing message. We will probably ask to speak to a few of your clients to find out how they describe you to their network. We also benchmark as many of your current measurements we can – this way you have a way of demonstrating ROI in 3 and 6 months down the track.
- I present the proposal to you, educating you at the same time about anything that is new to you. Once you’ve had a chance to comment on it and tweak it, we create a 30 day RoadMap which is a schedule of what you need to do in order to get the social media activity buzzing along. We also include a social media staff policy you can use.
- You love it and you get cracking on implementation.
- (If you need support during the implementation phase, you can outsource some of it to us)
Hey – don’t forget we’ve also got access to hundreds of brainstormers all over the world and we can tap into them at any stage during your implementation phase if you’d like to get ideas for competitions, brand awareness, community building.
Then – we sit back and become your brand advocates (followers) ourselves and enjoy your social media platforms!
